Lee Valley shooting plane
I thought some of you hand tool junkies may be interested in this.
Lee Valley is coming out with their own shooting plane (late August/September). Intro price will be $299 for O1 steel and $315 for PM V-11. Regular price will be $329/$345.
More of a luxury tool to have then a "must have". But after recently selling my #9 I may be tempted into buying one.
Plane information:
Length: 15-7/8
Base 2-1/8 (to fit Stanley #52 shooting board)
Blade: 2-1/4 wide, bevel up, 25° bevel angle. O1 or PM-V11. All of our standard 2-1/4 bevel up blades will fit this plane.
Bed: 12° bed angle, skewed 20°
Blade Adjustment: Typical Veritas Norris type adjuster, three set screws to precisely locate the blade, and rock the blade forward/back to adjust square
Mouth opening: adjustable toe piece with adjuster screw
Weight: 7-3/4 lbs or around 3.5kg.
Rear tote: adjustable for angle. Plane can be used with the blade down for jointing.

Andy - thanks for posting this. I'd always hoped that Veritas might bring out a shooting plane, and at a slightly more reasonable price than the LN offering. Knowing Veritas, it'll probably be better engineered as well.
All we need now is for somebody (anybody?) to bring out a modern take on the compass plane. Apart from antique Stanley/Record offerings I think only Kunz still make one, and by all accounts it is pretty bodgy. I've heard rumours several times that either Veritas or LN were working on a compass plane, but nothing has hit the market yet....

Hey John,
You are right. LN were supposed to bring out a compass plane as their 30th Anniversary plane in 2011 but nothing has been released.
Although I really like how Veritas have brought out a shooting plane and I'm sure they will put their touch to it, I still love the look of the LN #51. But as you mentioned, it's more expensive than the LV/Veritas offering which is what makes it more appealing.

So MrB, you want a compass plane eh? Well, you could do worse than one of these (scroll down) from Abiel Rios in Brooklyn. Not sure if you can see the pics unless you're a member of talkFestool, but it's an outrageous thang, and worth joining for just to have a look. There are several other pics of the master creations from this chap in that thread as well (the vise is staggering).
If you can't see them then let me know, and I can copy a couple across.

That LV shooting plane looks to have a bit of weight to it. Should be nice to use. The intro price is very good too.
I could see the pics Brett. Very nice. Is that a pimped Stanley compass plane? Those were the droids I was looking for.

The Veritas shooting plane certainly looks interesting. From that image it appears to have an adjustable mouth as well - not sure why one is needed when fine shavings are the norm for shooters, but anyhoo...............
I have to say it is a brave decision by Lee Valley to fund the costs associated with developing this new plane.
The market for dedicated shooting planes must be very small to tiny, and perhaps even miniscule.
I can't see enough of these being sold to redeem the R&D or amortise the setup and production costs, however in this shrinking world of hand tools, I suppose that a company has to have a competitive product to that of its competitors.
Good news for hand tool users like us I suppose.
Good luck to them.
Cheers

I also read that they may be bringing out a shooting board also.
I know LN have been talking about it for a while so it will be interesting where they go with it.
I think the price of the LV is very good. As SG mentioned it's a very small market so I don't expect them to sell as many. But you never know...
