Anyone want a LeeValley/Veritas LA Jack Plane? - Good AU$
I was ordering a LV LA Jack plane but postage was a bit steeper than I liked.
Is anyone interested in buying one and splitting the cost of shipping? (UPS is as cheap as ground shipping!)
Veritas® Low-Angle Jack Plane - Lee Valley Tools
If I order 1 it lands @ ~$320AU
If I order 2 they land @ ~$280AU + shipping to you
If I order 3 they land @ ~$273AU + shipping to you
$420 @ Carbatec
What is the quality difference between these and the LN LA Jack?
They are rather expensive sourced locally
Anyone interested?

I already have a Veritas Bevel Up Jack, best plane that I have ever owned.
I was faced with the same choice, and I opted for the LV BU for the following reasons.
The major difference, between the two is the LV BU is 2 1/4" wide blade were the LN has 2" blade. The LV BU is 2-3/4" wide, were the LN BU is narrower in the body. LV BU is 15" long the LN BU is only 14".
In short the LV BU is the big brother to the LN BU. It means the LV BU weights more however, still less then a comparable sized Bevel Down bench plane.
The LV BU has lateral adjustment the LN does not, you have to tap the blade or shift it with your hand. To be honest, I rarely use the lateral adjuster, preferring my hand to fine adjust. The LN BU only has depth adjustment.
The LV BU comes with the set screws on either side of the blade prevent it from shifting in use, but allows full lateral adjustment, it also comes with mouth adjustment screw, this stops the adjustable mouth hitting the blade and allows you to fine adjust, the mouth opening, or to reset the mouth opening to a default position quickly and easily. The LN BU has non of these features.
The other major difference is in the tote, some people do not like the feel of LV tote, preferring the classic LN tote. Which one you prefer depends on you. I did not like the LV totes to start with, however I got used to it and now I am rather fond of it.
Just make sure to get an extra blade for a cranky grain. My second blade is ground at 50º giving me a total 62º. Their is nothing that it cannot defeat.

Hey Bitslong
How much do you reckon shipping on each plane will be approximately?

Local shipping?
I'd guess $12 registered. I've only bought planes so someone else may have a better estimate. Luban?

Thx for the comparo Helmut - exactly what I was interested in. Admittedly I was expecting the LN to be superior, no reason, flashy catalogue maybe. You've gotten me even more excited about it!

Lee Valley say the BU Jack weighs "just under 6 lbs" (I'm not sure if that's with or without the blade which is typically packed in a separate box), 15" long, 2-3/4" wide (I'm guessing the height is about 6" — in it's box and wrapped for posting call it 40cm x 8cm x 16cm and (crossed fingers) just under 3kg
the cost Sydney to Melbourne would be — $11.65 for a Regular parcel ($9.90 if it fits in a 3kg satchel), $22.80 for Express Post ($11.30 if it fits in a 3kg Express Post satchel) and $27.40 Express Post Platimum (signature on delivery) (or $15.90 if it fits in a 3kg satchel)
However, if the package is over 3kg (but less than 4kg), the cost (Sydney -- Melbourne) would be $12.40 for a Regular parcel, $26.70 for Express Post and $31.30 Express Post Platimum
I didn't look up the cost of Registration for more Aust Post rates look here Australia Post, Calculate postage ratesregards from Alberta, Canada

Coincidentally, the LV BU Jack was my next planned plane purchase. I already have the LV BU smoother, which is still a delight to use.
Maybe PM me if you decide to go ahead with this purchase?
Cheers

Sorry Wongdai & Mr Brush but I'm out for now - Monoman tempted me with an offer too good to pass up, so for now I'll have to delay.
If you're both interested maybe organise a buy together?
