    Default full length shaving shrinks?

    this has puzzled me for a while now. Everytime i take a full length shaving and then place that shaving on the edge i just planed they're not the same length! i figured this must have something to do with characteristic of wood. I want answers to this.

    There are a couple of reasons why this would happen, the primary one being that the timber fibres are held under tension by the fibres around then, which is where the spring in timber comes from. By removing the shaving from the rest of the board, you are relieving the tension, allowing the shaving to shrink.

    The shavings that I get from the face are varied as that is what I expect when starting to flatten the board. The ones that I get from the edge are mostly the same thickness. I have at time produced shavings that tend to be thicker on one side then the other, that's because I sometime tend to push more on one side.

    Recently I have been planning just for the fun of it, gets a little bit of a work out after work. Being a little more regular.
