Default Letter A stamped in lever cap

    Morning all,

I bought an old backing iron for a 41/2 bailey pattern plane. It is stamped inside With the letter A. This vaguely rings a bell, but I cannot remember where I read about this.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks,

    Tim

Edit - Why I wrote lever cap in the title I have no idea. I need to get one, and a blade, to complete this plane - guess I was having another senior moment

    Hi Tim,
I can't find any evidence to support this, but it may simply be on cap-irons made in Australia.
There is reference in the USA types to "S" and "B" markings but not on the cap-iron. I can find no "A" in these USA type studies.
Others may have an answer besides this.

    Default Letters under Cap Iron

    Never seen an A.
Stanley Cap Irons were blank until about 1930 then an O was used in two sizes of font, later they used an S.
Australian Turner Planes had a T.
I recollect an Acorn brand of Plane, possibly from it.
    Take care and Stay Sharp,
    Jim

Brilliant Jim. I just checked two of the Acorns I have (don't ask why - there's no good reason) The 5 has A under the backing iron. The 4 has H - just to be different.

    Learnt something today

    Regards,
