Default good u.s. site to look at

Another u.s. site you guys might like to look at is called "the best things". I bought a perfect stanley 93 from them a couple of years ago and postage was reasonable. I then tried to buy some cam clamps bit the postage they came back with was about $100 which they said they thought was too much. They sell lots of stuff and its worth a look if only to see what more than U.S. $7000 of Karl Holtey plane looks like. (that is seven thousand I wrote)
    cheers

catalogue was amusing but i guess we all know l.n. don't discount, and i have thought of buying direct for a while and it is good to know they are doing it now.
anyway check out those holtey planes they are amazing.

If no discount then why have set prices in it? Where is incentive to buy a full set?

    Or do they think we are not capable of working out 3 X $110 = $330 or 5 X 96 is not $489 ?

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but I just went onto the Australian LN website and they have just reduced their prices.
    PRICE REDUCTION
We would like to advise our customers that we have reduced our prices significantly due to favourable exchange rates. The printed prices in our 2008/2009 catalogue are now obsolete. The prices in our new 2010 / 2011 catalogue and on our website are current and correct.

I could have sworn the other day when I was looking at the LA block planes that they were $249, now - $169 ($80 off)
    The iron ones are $139.

I'm probably about a week late, but I can't seem to find it mentioned anywhere else on the forum.

The AUS prices for stuff are still a major rip off

0-1 tool steel Chisel set - AUS price AUS$395 - US price US$275
    Base #4 smoother - AUS price AUS$515 - US price US$350
Std Adjust Mouth Block - AUS price AUS$249 - US price US$165
Taking the exchange rate an GST into account that's a mark up of between 22 and 29% - I guess that's better than before.

I dunno if that is reasonable or not but Lee-Valley/Veritas markups are currently in an even worse position around 35 - 45%

My guess is that some of it is the AUS buy price from the supplier but the other is consumer gouging by the local seller. I'm all for supporting local suppliers but something's gotta give here.

How much would delivery be for say a No7 jointer from the US?
Or is it cheaper to get a few things at once? or would it still work out cheaper to get just one plane from the US + delivery then from LN Aust?

You basically pay by weight so it works out the same but shipping is also very expensive unless you can get them to use United States Postal Service (USPS) - that's different from United Postal Service.

But even USPS won't be cheap
The No 7 weighs 8¼ lbs.I figure it will be a 10lb package for shipping.
You can use the USPS online calculator yourself - International Price Calculator
    I get around $70!

I have to contest this assertion that LN in the past has not allowed Australian's to purchase directly from Maine.

I bought my first LN plane direct from Maine in about 1997 -- at the time, the ouch factor was the 37% duty I had to pay to get the plane out of Customs' clutches.

Since then, every year or so I've bought some tools direct from Lie Neilsen in Maine. Generally I stay with lighter weight items that wont be a killer for postage.
Never has Lie Neilsen Maine refused to deal with me.
The only issue I have is their preference to use the more expensive USPS Global Priority option, but I can understand and respect their reasons for doing so. Besides, it's hard to complain when an order placed Monday night (Austrlian time) is delivered before I leave for work on Friday!

As to the Australian pricing. I have no real issue with them.
I last crunched the numbers back in July. At that time, a #6 from the States would have cost about AUD$10 more at my front door than the exact same plane shipped from Adelaide.

using the RBA's rate for last Friday 0.9504 US cents to the Aussie $, I calculate the total cost of a #7 from the States to be arround AUD$620 -- USD$425 for the plane, plus USD$147 for shipping, plus 3% foreign exchange "fee" from my card issuer.
    The aussie price is $625
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    5 new bevel edged chisels (without roll) U$275 + U$39 postage = U$314 or Au$324
or you could pay Au$395 $71 (or about 20% more expensive).

This is not going to help my bank balance.
