Yet another mystery tool.
Hi all,
What do you think this is? It looks like the shoulder pad of a breast drill, the only info' is "PATENT" stamped into the shank, tapered square socket on end lacks locking screw.
Length overall: 116.4 mm, length of pad: 104 mm. Socket tapers from 16.5 mm to 11.8 mm over depth of 35 mm, very similar dimensions to Morse square taper bit. Remnants of red paint.
Cheers,
Geoff.

The end of a breast drill curves the other way so thats unlikely. The tapered socket suggests it was part of a set. Of course when you have no idea the default answer is ''perhaps to do with leather working''.

Thanks for your suggestions to date. I like the idea of some type of last, but not the carriage handle due to it's not being a very comfortable hand-grip in that context. To clarify, "end lacks locking screw" doesn't mean the screw is missing, there is no hole for a screw.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Geoff, I wouldn't rule out it's being a handle on the basis of the not-so-comfy upper part. Some old tools were designed by folks with a misanthropic bent, I reckon.
The thought that sprang to my mind was similar to the carriage lock theme - a handle for undoing those "tamper-proof" taps in public places that have a recessed shaft.
I'm surprised no-one has come forward with a definite id by now. Maybe you've stumped 'em good, this time....
Cheers,IW

If I grab hold of it with the shank protruding between my two middle fingers, as if I was going to press down and turn a tap or lock, the gussets under the "pad" are quite uncomfortable against my fingers.
Cheers,
Geoff.
