Default Lie Nielsen & Veritas & eBay??

I've been trawling eBay for quite a while now, occasionally finding a bargain (it was much better in the depths of the GFC) and have noticed that there are WAY more Lie Nielsen items for sale that Veritas.

So, I'm wondering if this indicates that either:

    1. Lie Nielsen sell far more product than Veritas. It would have to be possibly 10 times the volume to explain what I've noticed. Greater market share translates into far more on the 2nd hand market etc; or

    2. Veritas customers are SO happy with their tools that they can't bear to part with them, indicating greater brand loyalty & possibly superior tools.

Anyone have any thoughts on this??

    Gday Ross,
I might be off track on this one but it seems the Lie Neilsen items are all from the same seller, currently anyway. but if you've been scouting for a while and it hasn't changed then I'm stumped.

I have been watching the LN items too and as Joey says most of the items have been from a couple of sellers. One guy said when he first started selling that he had 31 items to get rid of, he's one of the ones still selling. There have been a couple of items from the UK also. But as you say very few LV items. LV items are generaly a little more afordable than LN and I think some people may try and get some bigger bucks back from there LN tools. The other thing that I have noticed is that almost all the LN tools have been as new and still in their original wrapping so it's not like these guys are even using them and saying I don't like this thing, they are just reselling. Most of them go for more than they are worth to buy from LN Aust.

    Hi Guys,

Yeah, I've been watching this for a few years (have some automated searches set up for eBay) Sometimes it is one or two guys selling off a collection, sometimes it is whole bunch of individuals. Usually a mix, with maybe a half dozen from one seller, then ones & twos from others. But yourarely see more than 3 or 4 Veritas tools listed at the one time, while it is common to see 30 or more LN tools on the same day.

You are right about the condition of many of the tools. I have bought quite a few things and all have been in original packaging with no evidence of any use. I won't buy unless I can get it for at leat $US50 less than the best US retail price I can find. This was easier during the early days of the GFC. Seems the locals are currently less panicked & are spending again, as I have not been able to pick up anything for quite a while. It staggers me that much of this stuff goes within $5 to $10 of full retail (and LN & LV often ship for free within the US, which negates even this megar saving) As has been posted eleswhere, a lot of stuff goes ABOVE retail. Sometimes this can be explained by various eBay related cashback schemes, but not always.

What I was told was this: There are some countries that will charge high import duty on new items but not on used/second hand items. Many buyers are prepared to spend to the retail price on eBay items because it actually works out cheaper for them.

Good point Derek, often the title says new but further down says used or vis versa.

Interestingly, many of these high price sales are listed as US ONLY - NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. I guess it is possible they are all using pack & forward agents, but suspect this is unlikely. My guess is that testosterone gets in the way much of the time (I'm a WINNER & I'm DAMN WELL gonna win this %#!!@& auction). As mentioned earlier, I also understand that US eBay & others (such as MicroSloth BING) offer cashbacks for eBay purchases, so this might account for some of the behaviour.

Anyway, back on topic, Derek, do you (as a seemingly Veritas fan) have any theories why there is such a discrepancy between volumes of listed LV & LN kit??
