Even as your "seconds" they are much nicer than mine. Mind you if I was making them for someone else I'd make mine nicer too

Thanks for the welcome, and sorry about the delay in getting back.

Your opinions are quite helpful, and Ray's side by side picture of the Liogier and Gramercy is most appreciated.

I have been in touch with Noel, and will be sending him the picture below. He said he can work off of a sketch to create a custom rasp. I don't know if there are limits to the amount of curve they can do, but if there aren't, then I think what I have drawn up will serve my needs well. Of course, it's hard to tell without actually using it, so wish me well.

Isaac, I'm one of the people who has road-tested the handle-making rasps. It seems that noone who has used them, so far, thought the curve was quite right. Looking at the curve you've drawn, it strikes me that it is very similar to the rasps we tested. I thought the ellipsoidal curve wasn't satisfactory, because it only allows the tip of the rasp to fit into a closed handle comfortably - if you insert the rasp any further, you still foul the opposite side. In fact, it was very little improvement over a straight rasp, I found.

I would like to be able to use more of the body of the rasp for shaping the inside of the grip, and it seems to me a more circular curve, involving the whole rasp, will work better. However, it's still theory ATM, and remains to be tested....

I've attached a bit of a sketch, which you could regard as a first draft of the curve change. Isaac's "proposed Liogier curve" is at the bottom. It does look just like the rasp in the various pics.

My curve is the same length as Isaac's. I simply matched Isaac's with a flexible curve (that I've had since High School in the early 70s), and then tightened the curve up, leaving less straight as well.

Yep, that's looking better, could even have a little tighter (smaller) radius towards the tip but your 1st draft is a good starting point. It has curve up in the part of the rasp where you are more likely to be working..............Ok just printed out said diagram, bent up a piece of silver solder to the curve and made like a handle maker. Seems pretty good to me.

The shipment including the new curve in the Handle Makers Rasp arrived last week. They look like this now:






And for the uninitiated, the "Flat" is safe, without teeth (like our Prime Minister, some might say):





Also, the new Brass Brushes for cleaning Rasps arrived, and they do an excellent job. I reckon the somewhat ropey handles might just be the obligatory Chinese component, but the wiring is done in Germany by the look and feel of them. You can see a really rough part on the side of the handle - what in the hell will I use to clean that up with?

I avoid using any metal on the teeth of a rasp or file. They cause unnecessary wear.

What I prefer is to use a stiff bristle brush (from Bunnies) as I work, and then, if the teeth are gunked up or before storing, lubricate the rasp teeth with camellia oil and brush that once the gunk has softened.

Resurecting an old thread here. I'm about to get a couple of Liogier rasps, a 250mm cabinet makers in 9 grain & a handlemakers rasp. Just looking for advice on what grain I should get for the handlemakers rasp, 9 or 12?

You want both the 12 and the 15. The rasp I use most however is the #14 model makers rasp that he includes in the 5 pc. cabinet makers starter kit.
