    Hi Andy

I can't get to it to check, but I think I've got my #9 honed to 27°

and LN do make an O1 steel blade for their #9, it's stock number is 1-BL-9I-O1
    regards from Alberta, Canada

I'm intrigued Andy, are you into collecting some of these not easy to get LN planes?
It's a good idea If you can collect as well as make use of these planes at the same time.

I have no idea what they are worth I guess only LN in the States can give you an idea.

I have one of these #9 bronze mitre planes & have had it for quite a while now,it actually came in it's white box as they did in the early years. I asked David at LN Australia to order a spare blade for me ,took almost a year as I was on their case about not stocking blades for this plane.

LN in the States went to the trouble of machining a new blade for it and I now have a new second blade for it.

I would not say that I have not used the plane on a regular basis ,however it has been used and has the patina that you find in aged bronze/brass/zinc
I'm happy to leave it like that.

My #9 shows a No 1 in the body casting which I suspect is a casting run Number however I could stand corrected as I reckon LN would have the first in the series in their keeping and only they woul know.

If I can get my act together perhaps tomorrow I'll try and post a couple of pics of it to the site here..

I thought Dereks mention of an approximate cost of these to purchase was very generous ,mind though I have not researched any prices on these.

    Prepare to be shocked.

The thing about these planes is that it just takes two bidders with too much testosterone on eBay to send the price sky high. This occurs. And then a precedent is set.

I think the guys from woodnet give a clear indication to the valuation.

I posted a query on WN for Andy.

Not many replies. There also has not been any discussion about these planes in over 12 months.

The highest figure that was suggested was $900. I had one person contact me offering to sell theirs for $800.

In my opinion, the market value should be at least $1000 since this is the accepted market value of the bronze #4 1/2. Keep in mind that fewer #9s were made than #4 1/2s, and the value should go up accordingly. As with the value of all these items, they are worth what someone will pay for them. This is low when there is only one buyer, and high when there are two or more prepared to outbid each other.

So wouldn't it make perfect sence for you to purchase the one for AU $800 or is it $800 US, then throw it on eBay and let testosterone fly?
$900 is a far cry from $2500. That is called falsely over-inflating the market.

Andy I am happy that you now have the LN planes in bronze that are also good functional pieces ,If you don't like using the #9 with the knob you can always go for a dog mounting on the plane ,something I have found offers a different aspect for use of the plane.

For clarification of the number cast into the bottom of the plane here is the response from L&N in the US.

    Quote,

That number is simply designating the placement on the match plate for the casting. It is a way that we can track castings to see what is going on as a match plate wears. I hope that the plane is giving you good service.

    Thanks for all the replies.
As it turned out my paypal transaction did not go through. Because i'm overseas paypal must have thought something was strange and cancelled it, as a result I need to fax/send copies of my drivers licence etc which simply can't happen at the moment. As a result iv'e gotten my fiance to try and sort it out for me with her paypal account but the same thing is happening (she's in Australia!). So iv'e since changed my mind, and instead of getting the Anniversary #4 1/2, which was the plane I was after in the first place, i've bought the #9 in bronze (trying to anyway!).

I'm not a collector, iv'e just always wanted a LN 4 1/2 Anniversary smoother. However, the price was too high so i'll wait until one comes up at decent price.

    Cheers,
    Andy

Talking Re: LN #9 Bronze mitre plane

Below are the photos of my bronze LN. It's in great condition considering it was made in the 90's!
Once I sharpen the blade I'll put it to good use.
