Default LN Skew Block Plane or LV Shoulder Plane

Considering buying one or other of these planes for paring tenons etc.

Any views on relative advantages/disadvantages of each plane type?

    Hi Mat,

I asked a similar question to yours a while back (see thread linked below).

I ended up buying the Lie-Nielsen 140. It is a great little plane and is excellent for trimming tenon cheeks. I also have the Lie-Nielsen medium shoulder plane which is a great plane for trimming tenon shoulders.
    Regards,
    Ian.

Or you can always buy the LN rabbet block plane.

Choices, choices! The 140 is a great plane. My only dislike about it is seeing how it is handed, it has often needed to be the opposite skew as far as convenience goes. And I was too cheap to buy both [the left-hand one wasn't even available back then].

    Take care, Mike

The 140 is a more specialised plane and will be a bit more limited in what it can do compared to the sholder plane. If I were going to buy one or the other it would be the sholder plane. But not the LN, it would be the Lee Valley.
