    Default Look what I found

I have a few planes in my shed that I haven't had the chance to examine closely.

I had a bit of time today, and there was a No. 6 there which I thought was probably a no-name plane. Covered in surface rust and white paint.

So I cleaned it up with some elbow grease and steel wool, and it turns out to be a Stanley. A pleasant surprise indeed.

It has "L. Bailey's Patent Dec 24 1867" on the cap iron, and "Bailey Patent Aug 31 1858 Aug 6 1867" on the brass ferule adjusty thingo. I reckon it might be a few years old, and it all looks original, including lovely rosewood handles. Not much japanning left unfortunately, but after a cleanup and a tune it planes beautifully.

It has Stanley on the blade.

    Here are some pics

    and

    I'm really happy.

Looks like a treasure to me.

Does it have the hardened edge on the blade?

Has is got 2 patent dates on the lateral adjuster, and is the adjuster a one piece arrangement (the end of it is turned up to engage the iron, ie, no little disc) ?

It may be a type 5, the first type with the lateral adjuster.
Wish I could find one of those in my shed

Wow, so many questions. I wish I knew more about planes.

OK, hardened edge on the blade - I wouldn't have a clue. How does one tell?

Next, yes, two patent dates on the adjustment wheel, and the lateral adjustment is one piece.

So I'm guessing this one is worth hanging onto yes?

Some of the older blades have hardened material welded to the cutting
edge, the blade is mild steel. You can see it is a different color metal.

Ahh right. On examination, the blade appears to be one piece of metal, with no different colours.

I think the plane has seen a fair bit of use and sharpening. I would be interested in finding out how long the original blade is, so I can determine how much use and sharpening it has had over the years.

It was originally given to me by me FiL, and I would guess (and I will ask him) that it was handed down to him by his father.

Nice find there. I was intrested in the shape of the front knob. I am guessing that is a replacement but what do the old plane experts think.

I have a similar plane. A number 6 with two S's cast into the base forward of the tote. There is also an S on the bottom of the cap iron lever. Mine has the low knob.

Does your plane have to two S's?

    Regards,

    Paul

It doesn't. Guess it must be a different type. Does yours have the one piece lateral adjustment lever?

The lateral adjuster was missing when I received the plane. I have just replaced the frog with lever intact.

I'd like to know where my plane was made. It was my grandfather's or his father's. They were cabinet makers who worked in the UK and Canada.
