    Default Looking for a vice

    Hello all

My work bench is getting to the stage that i need to find a vice

There does not seem to be a huge range out there and they vary greatly in price eg from $80 to 800+

What would people recommend? something like a record #52/53 for around $280?

Is there a cheaper way that will still get the job done?

Im sure a veritas would be good but out of my price range

Depends on the style of your bench but a record 52 1/2 should be available second hand for 50-70 dollars.
If you want screw type vices then carbatec or one of the other specialist plave is a good place to start.

I got excited when I saw the thread title, "Looking for a vice"... I've got several of my own. Then I realised you meant a bench vise. I bought a Record 521/2 in top condition at a garage sale for... wait for it... twenty bucks. I suspect it was one of those "recently divorced" sales because the woman running it was a dead-set bitter Amazon type who obviously was not keen on men... even a magnificent example like myself! I snapped up a few other w/w tools and bits and pieces including a couple of old planes for ten bucks a pop. My wife is an avid antique collector who always had to drag me to garage sales but since my brush with the bitter Amazon, I'm the first one in the ute on Saturdays! The moral of this story is that there are some real bargains out there so I wouldn't be rushing to pay hundreds of dollars on the shiny new stuff. Besides, I'm convinced that the "New is better" idea does not always apply to tools! Take Stanley Bailey planes for example!

And to carry on with Buz's theam, last weekend I picked up an 8" Dawn QR vice for a Lobby LLoyd . . . pity I have already got two vices on the main bench and several engineering ones strewn around the shed . . . but it has already been claimed.

    I think you're gloating .

You might be in the wrong thread. Try "Monday evening show'n'tell"

Seriously, I shudder to think how much money I wasted always buying brand new stuff and shunning second-hand. I have learned (painfully) that in our hobby you can't compromise on safety and workmanship, but you can compromise on purchases if you are patient and buy wisely.
