Default Low Angle Block Planes - bed filed down to bottom of the sole?

    hello,

I have a question regarding block planes: in his book about planes Garrett Hack writes that one should "file the bed flat right to the bottom of the sole" (p. 112). - really?
I am just in the process of tuning a new stanley #60-1/2 and between the bottom of the sole and the bottom of the bed there is a "step" of about 0.5 mm. would you really file the all the way down, so that the bed and the bottom the plane meet in one fine edge?
of course this would bring the edge of the blade considerably closer to the back edge of the mouth, but wouldn't it also make a part that is already quite thin even thinner?

how do your block planes look?

any replies would be greatly appreciated,

    david

From memory my 60 1/2 was about the same after I'd filed the bed flat. My new Veritas low angle block has a step too, might be a tad less than 0.5mm but it's still there.

    thanks for the reply!

so, maybe I'll just file it down until it's flat, and stop there for the moment...

    anyone else?

    regards, david
