Default Which low angled jack plane?

Am currently looking at low-angled jack planes eg Stanley 62.

Should one try to get an old Stanley 62 or save the pennies for a Veritas or LN version?

There's one going on ebay at the mo'. I know it's price is going to climb. I'm all for using 2nd-hand where I can, reducing waste and all that. I'm also developing a rather nasty collecting habit, being a keen student of history or nostalgia or hoever you wish to put it. I am however collecting with a view to use rather than display. Hence my predicament. Should I pursue the veteran (stopping if it goes higher than a new LV or LN) or as I said earlier save my coin for the modern version?

I guess one could simplify the question by saying which one's best and worth the money?

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

    Hello Virg,
I have a Stanley 62 and find it suits my needs. Only problem I have is finding a replacement blade, mine is just about gone. Possibly LN/ Hock etc may fit but if not there may be a problem getting one.
    Regards, Bill.

    Hello Virg,
The Stanley 62 is a fine plane, and many people who have good ones love them. If this one goes for less than $450 - $500 then it will be a bargain IMHO. They are known to be a little weak around the mouth as the grey iron is quite thin there. If you were after a LAJ for use, then the Veritas LAJ wins hands down for value as well as function. Apart from being the most user friendly of the LAJ's, it is only US$215. With the OZ$ high this is excellent value for money.
    Cheers

Why wouldn't you go for a bevel up Jack, with a couple of spare blades, to provide a range of cutting angles?

    PS OK... Veritas LA=BU!

I'm with Scribbly Gum. If it's going to be a user, get the Veritas LAJ. Why pay more than the cost of a new LAJ for an old one that's not going to perform as well? My Veritas LAJ is my favourite plane.

Or if you must have a classic looking plane, fork out the extra for an LN (looks better than the Veritas, but has less features).

I too have collector tendencies, but fortunately I'm too tight to pay collector prices .

    Cheers, Vann.

Like already said, the original Stanley 62s can be pricey and have mouth defects or other issues unless you are lucky and get a good one.

If you like the classic good looks an quality go with the lie Neilson. Others will describe the virtues of the LV low angle jack with its bells and whistles of lateral adjuster and side screws to centre the blade but its really not necessary. The biggest benefit of the LV may be the extra weight over the LN however the LV has the issues of its looks and the more practical issue of the tote design and angle which some find uncomfortable.

Many thanks for your advice folks.

Have just seen the auction finish and I'm not overly disappointed that I didn't win. I bid $339 but lost out. $396 in the last 7 seconds. I just saved myself $339 (Which I can now spend on a term of swimming lesson for my kids)!

I'll keep my eyes open and hope to find one in the bottom of a junk shop.

    Cheers,
    Virg.
