    Default lubricating sweep handles

    Hi all.

I have a couple of braces that have either squeaky or seized grips.. the latter has been over lubed by the previous owner, so I assume some has solidified under the wood.

By "handle", I assumed the OP meant the wood of the crank rather than the top pad. If that's correct, there's no way I know of pulling that apart without destroying it - all you can do is try to get some solvent like kero or turps through, if it's oily gunk, & try to flush it out. Then let it dry & hope that quietens it, or maybe spray some dry lubricant in.

If it's the pad, then as China says....

    Cheers,
    IW

    Hi Kenny,
When I get one of those I hold the frame in the vise so that the handle is vertical and as Ian said get a bit of solvent into it. After its soaked in a bit start rotating it back and forth. Once it turns fairly freely I wrap a long strap (leather belt) around it and spin it back and forth. As you're doing that move around the brace to equalise the pressure points. Bear in mind some models have ball bearings either end of the handle.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

WD40 will dissolve any solidified oil or grease. Metho or white spirit to kill the WD40 and re lubricate .

Yes any of the above will dissolve grease. WD 40 kind of just evaporates away after while.

Bit reluctant to apply WD40 to any sort of wood.. Mineral Turps should be OK... will try that option soon.
