LV Low Angle vs Bevel up smoothers
I am hoping someone can enlighten me.
I can not see the difference (physically) between the Low Angle and the Bevel Up Lee Valley smoothers.
I read the detail on www.leevalley.com for both planes, but other than weight, I'm still confused.
I see from the LA detail that a High Angle blade can be fitted, which confuses me even more. Bed angles are the same.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Clinton.

Have a look here it is a thread started by Derek, it contains alink to a review he wrote on the BU Smoother, and compared it to a couple of others, including the LA smoother.
After reading this you'll be enlightened or totally confused.Boring signature time again!

Hi Clinton
The short answer:
The LV LA Smoother (LAS) is equivalent to a #4 size and heft. 2" wide blade.
The LV BU Smoother (BUS) is equivalent to a #4 1/2 size and heft. 2 1/4" wide blade.
Both have a bed of 12 degrees in a bevel up configuration, which means that you can set up blades from low angle to high angle, as you please.
The LAS is a more general plane. For example, can also be used on a shooting board. It remain, nevertheless, a superb smoother.
The BUS is a dedicated smoother, and nothing else (it cannot be used on a shooting board).
The LAS, being lighter, has greater "feel". The BUS, being heavier, has greater control. This is really the determining factor - get the LAS for its wider usage, or get the BUS for its greater ease in the smoothing process. Both will produce a superior performance.
Regards from Perth
Derek
