Stone Monkey (and anyone else who's tried emailing me through the forum), there's something amiss & only a few emails sent via the forum have come through to me. So if you sent me an email & haven't had an answer within 24 hours, it means I haven't got it. Just PM me with your email address & I'll send it straight away....
Cheers,IW

If it helps at all I can pop it on my google drive and it can be directly downloaded. If you prefer to keep distribution contained than that's fine, just offering.

Thanks Damian, I think it would be easier if I leave it as-is for now. I would like to revise it within the year, and if I'm satisfied it's fit for a wider world, we can look into making it directly downloadable then, that would be good. There have been no problems from my end in emailing it as pdfs (one mailbox choked on the files, but everyone else has had plenty of capacity), it's just that emails to me via the Forum are not arriving, for some reason. PMs are fine.....

Ian
Now that I have read the manual cover to cover, may I congratulate you on putting all this interesting information together.
While I was reading it, I came across a few typos and things that you might consider expressing differently, to make the point clearer.
Would you mind if I marked up by hand a copy of the manual with suggestions and emailed it to you for you to consider as you prepare a revised version?Cheers

Jeremy, I am certainly looking for feedback, comments & criticisms, so fire away - any parts you don't find clear I'm especially interested in. The second edition won't be out for quite a while, but I'll try to make as many corrections & improvements as I can whenI get around to doing the revised version.

Firstly, Thanks very much for this manual. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and now cant wait to starting manufacturing.
So I'm in the process of putting together a little tool kit. What I'm having trouble with is the saw blades. I've searched nearly every jewellery supply store I can find. The coarsest I can seem to find is #4 (I'm glad I re-read the manual first, because I nearly got #8/0's) here in Aus anyway. I found one supplier in America I think where I can get a number #6 Pike. Do you have any leads on places to source the tools?
Thanks for all the great advice and help.

I'm in exactly the same boat, Shane. I have no idea why, but blades coarser than #4 have disappeared off everyone's catalogue. I phoned around and managed to get some 6s a while ago, but they weren't top quality & I went through them in no time, so I would be very wary of no-name lots like N.C. pointed to. In any case, a mixed lot like that would contain sizes you'd have little or no no use for unless you are thinking of taking up jewellery as another hobby. The place I usually buy my blades from reckoned they'd have more stock of the coarser blades "early in the new year", but nothing has appeared on their website so far, & I think the current disruption in trade might mean they are still a long way away!
If you are desperate, 4s will do the job, but you will need to be patient, they cut much more slowly and are not as robust as the higher numbers, so you'll break a lot. However, I have sawn out 1/2" thick lever caps with #4s, which is probably why my right shoulder is giving me grief...
The brands I've always trusted are Pike & Grobet (both Swiss), but someone gave me some German blades, "Eberle" and I found them to be excellent, so there's another name you can search for...

Thanks Ian,
I found some branded 'Herkules' from a jewellery supplies place in Melbourne. Will give them a go and see.

Now just have to source some brass.

Apologies to all the people I've sent my 'manual' to - I somehow forgot to include the introduction! I was wondering why a few people had asked me questions that I thought I'd covered!
It's not a very large file, so I've attached it here. It covers the basic tools & materials needed, in a very quick overview.
I'm working on the "second edition" which will be more thorough in a few areas, but don't hold your breath waiting for it, it may be some time....
Cheers,IW
