old marples brace
the owner where i am working brought out this old brace and i am wondering if anyone can give me any info as i have never seen anything like it.
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.
Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

Rat52,
that's an ebony filled Marples "Ultimatum Brace"
Made about 1865.
Looks like a very good example.
Ebony was the most common filler, rosewood, beech, boxwood and horn are much harder to find.
These have come down in value somewhat over the last 5 or so years, from about $600 plus .... down to as low as $350.00
Regards,
Peter

I wasn't debating current prices, I was just amazed at the price of that one. I will also be amazed if he gets that much. Is this the one you were looking at? It looks a little rough compared to Rat's.

That's the one Toby. Wasn't having a go at you. When tools get into four figures I come over faint and have to lie down.
Cheers,
Jim
ps yes it does look rougher
