mathesion hand planes
Hi guys
Just had a lucky score bought some hand planes from an auction and they ended up being made in glascow by matheison
I scored 6 rabbiting planes and 1 wooden hand plane and 3 marking tools and an old hand saw I am missing 2 rabiting plane blades & the hand plane where would I look for new blades, there was also a making tool that takes a blade any ideas on this one also
I am missing some of the wedges but I have some jarrah thin stock to make them, I will post pictures of the planes and tools when I have taken some,
Also I have a 1940's wooden handlane that has some cracks in the side body what glue should I use to repair this

Pics needed!
Sounds like a good score, coffenup, but hard to make any judgements from the info provided so far.
Blades can be found in all sorts of places, but getting a precise match for a given profile won't be easy, so you might have to grind your own. Lee Valley sell tapered blades for wooden-bodied planes.
What sort of cracks are you dealing with in your plane? If they are large & threatening to bust it apart, glue may work, but if the cracks are full of gunk, you may have trouble getting any glue to stick. If the cracks are more cosmetic than structurally threatening, it may be best to leave them alone and simply give the body the traditional woody treatment - a good slather of boiled linseed oil...
Cheers,IW

For old blades there are lots on ebay but to find the exact one you need may take a bit of searching. There is a UK bloke that deals in old blades. I dont recall the exact name but an ebay search for plane blades should turn something up. As IanW said you may have to regrind to get a match. I would attempt to get old blades if possable. Other old makes loke Sorby, Marples, Tyzak, and other old UK blades would also be an option.
