    Default Matheson plane

    Hi,
    Well I dont usually have a lot of luck with ebay and most tools I see I get beat in the last second. Anyhow I managed to find this plane at a reasonable price.
    It was in good nick and did not need much work other than a clean with turps and a wipe of linseed oil on the wood. Is there a plane elf out there that sprinkles white paint spatters on all old planes. I got some off this first time round and will have another go later. I dont want to scrub away the old look however. The blade was very blunt and needed some back flattening. The aldi diamond stone earned its $8 worth getting the back flat. I checked with a square and the sides and foot are not quite 90* so wont be using it on a shooting board. Has a nice tight mouth and works well.

    Nice score mate! I searched for months to get an infill at a reasonable price. Eventually I got lucky after a 2.00am bidding war and got a craftsman-made infill plane for $100+postage from England. I had to flatten the bed a bitand file and refit a brass rod to hold the lever cap with equal pressure across the back of the iron. After a very short learning curve (I've made and used a few woodies) I've learned to adjust it with a small brass hammer, with the result being 1 thou shavings on jarrah.
    I love to hold it even when I'm not actually planing anything, just to feel the old mahogany tote and wonder about the craftsman who made and used it. Sometimes I just get it out to plane a bit of scrap, just for the pure tactile pleasure of it.
    They were and are very much a true craftsperson's tool. I bet you're enjoying using it.
    There's a boat inside me trying to get out.

    Nice John
    You'll notice with the paint spatters there are plenty of white but there is always a bit of pink, even if it's just one dot.
    Those were the droids I was looking for.
