Default Metallic Plane Co., Auburn NY, 1867 and 1869 patents

Since there was some interest in the Metallic Plane Co. planes, here are some pictures of their three lever jack plane. The plane has a brass plate to repair a crack on the left cheek. The handle was cracked and in removing it I had to break it into pieces because the bolt was completely corroded and stuck to the handle. The handle was made of beech wood, so it shouldn't be too difficult to make a replacement.

This post is not a review, the pictures are for your amusement. This plane is fairly complex, in particular the bed supporting the iron. The bed pitch can be adjusted to change the angle of the cutting edge. The top lever controls the depth adjustment, the left side lever controls the lateral adjustment and the right side lever locks the bed in place once the desired pitch has been dialed in.

The patent US Patent: 64,790 - Improvement In Bench-Planes describes in detail the features of this plane. The plane in the pictures and the plane in the patent diagrams don't match exactly. A detailed study of the differences between production planes and the patent version would be interesting.

These pictures are of the jack plane. The picture uploader turned a couple of the pictures upside down, I wasn't able to correct it.

As I mentioned above, the diagrams in the patent don't match the iron bed in the pictures. There were differences in production as well. In this picture, the bed at the top is the jack plane, the bed at the bottom is of a jointer plane. The parts that hold the screw cap are very different. Both planes are marked PALMER'S AND STORKE'S PATENTS, MAY 14 '67 AND OCT 19 '69, METALLIC PLANE CO. AUBURN, N.Y.

Sorry raffo, I went to tick "thanks for pictures" but the cursor hit "wants pictures" in my clumsiness. Just ignore it!
    Cheers,
