    Default Mitre Jack Saw

Thanks to William Mitchell‎ on fb ...

"The saw shown here is probably identified incorrectly more times than any other saw out there. Almost always it is either called a Floor Saw, or a Veneer Saw. It is neither.

The design is French and it is called a "Scie a Recaler utilisé avec un Boite a Recaler". The English translation for this is; a "Mitre Saw to use with a Mitre Jack". This example was probably made around 1890 by Trempé Coulaux & Co., a company that once made swords for Napoléon Bonaparte.

It has a 20" long by 5" wide plate with a full length mahogany handle. I bought this for a reasonable price from Jim Bode Tools and, thinking it was a veneer saw, I had it sharpened appropriately. Once I sorted out what it was, I sent it to Matt Cianci who jointed it and retoothed it with 12 tpi, with 15° of rake and 20° of fleam. Half the teeth have been set to the top side of the plate with the remaining untouched. This helps to prevent it from digging into the mitre jack. Peace"

I can see that as being rather handy. Would double as a flush trim saw too. Something else for the to do list.

20" long - this is a saw for big joints! How thick is the plate?
