modified muji
Hi,
I not so recently bought a muji block plane which i didnt particularly like (I guess im a metal plane kinda guy) and its been sitting around doing SFA so today I thought i'd modify it to I could use ot for curved surfaces. I got the idea from my recent windsor stool course at Sturt last January. I hope it will come in handy - although I think I'll have to put a rubber grommet over the top of the blade so it doesnt dig into my hand when I use it. anyway chech the photo and have a looksee.
cheersZed

A cunning stunt, Zed. Well done!
More info please. How did you go about producing this seriously modified number? Step by step instructions would be helpful.

i'm ashamed to admit it but it was all to simple. all I did was mark out 2 circular lines (one on each side) with a 8 inch grinder wheel (the original wheel from my grinder after I put on a white soft one), sawed off the excess with a hand saw then sanded it on the 12 inch sander until I got the shape I desired, after that I trimmed the edges with the disc sander freehand until I was happy with the bevels and the last thing was simply finishing with some 240 grit paper until it was smooth. I considered oiling it but didnt bother. the whole exercise took less than 20 minutes.
In retrospect it will work ok but the blade being straight rather than a curved one (the mouth is straight to of course) will not allow any serious compound curved shapes - just basic curve in one plane. poop happens.....Zed

How dare you Zed. You plane murderer. It is so sad to see a good plane ended up like this.

You could've given it to me, I'd have given it a good home. I'd have used it all the time. Why'd ya have to do it, Zed, why?
