Modifying Record T5 jack plane?
I am looking at widening the mouth on my Record Technical (T5) jack plane so I can fit in a thicker wooden plane blade (as per apricottrippers's thread) for better shooting board performane.
I don't think this plane is collectable as it has visible large pits on one side and is missing the side handle. However I thought I would check the scarcity of this plane type before I did the widening - I don't want to destroy something that is on its way to being relatively rare.
Opinions and feedback please?

Paul,
I am no expert but.. The T5s comand a decent sort of price usually, as they dont seem yo show up here that often at all. Bit more common in the UK, even then they go for a good price. Its really up to you I guess but Id be thinking hard about it. Sounds like you dont use it with a side handle anyway. Unless its really in bad condition and pitted all over the place, and poor handles etc, id personally look for another "ordinary" #5 to take a file to. Last T5s were aparently made between 1972-80. If its an earler one it will have the button on the lateral adjuster like the Stanleys, earlier again if the button is not fixed.
Regards
Steve.

I'd avoid opening the mouth. Pitting can usually be lapped out, and the handle can be replaced. Then you have a collectable plane.
Rather, get one of the LN "Stanley replacement" blades, LV or Hock blades. All will be thicker and A2. Then add a decent aftermarket cap iron (Hock or LN) for added stability and heft.

Steve, Derek,
thanks for the feedback as it gives me a feel for whether or not I'd be carrying out unwarranted vandalism on the plane. I'll take Derek's advice and go get a heavier A2 blade to fit into the plane.
