Slow,
I had this one on the bench just before I read your message, and was looking at the screws on mine with suspicion...now I see what they should look like. The bottom screw doesn't reach in far enough to catch even
I was thinking of putting mine on the table next weekend at the HTPAA sale...you have made me have a second thought???
Regards,
Peter

Hi Luban,
I suspect it might be "Russell & Horsfield" Just had a quick look at Don McConnell's book...
Russell & Horsfield Canada Works 38 Charles St 1854-1856
Russell & Co Thomas Canada Works 38 Charles St 1860-1878
Marks "RUSSEL & HORSFIELD", "JOHN SANDERSON"
Russell, Horsfield & White Canada Works 38 (108) Charles St 1879-1915
Just going by the "look" I would guess early 1900's maybe..... whoops... I was looking at Peters....
Yours looks to be a bit earlier, 2 screws (I think, bit hard to see..) , no medallion, nice lambs tongue, has that
beautifully elegant look...
Nice find..
the best way to get a template, is to put it into a flatbed scanner and then
print it out at a size (fiddle with the print scaling) to suit your hand...
Regards
Ray

Hi Ray
Thanks for that.. "HORSFIELD" it is
Thanks also for the scanner tip.. as luck would have it a freind offered me a scanner last week and already I have found three uses for it!!
The handle has three split nut screws.. one nut missing sadly but I think I have one that will fit from a junker Sorby saw.Best regards, Luban

Don't take it to the tool show.. I don't need another one!!
The screw is a pretty standard knurled machine screw thing.. funny thing is I was looking at it thinking mine may not be an original.
The more I look at it (it's staring at me from a shelf right now looking forelorn) the more I like the idea of it. Small, tidy.. I'm seeing it mounted to a board with a couple of pegs to drop straight into two dog holes.
Will we get to see any of your own work at the show on the Sunday? or is that reserved for people who front up to your doorstep with a bottle?
It was great getting to fondle the Rebate wip a couple of shows back.Best regards, Luban

Luban,
I went to the book and yours is more like those in the pix.
The screws in mine are the wrong thread count. They are 1/4 NF and have been partially stripped. I got out the parts box and found they should be 1/4 - 28 TPI. I have a tap but not a die that size, however I can use the lathe to make a screw. The two screws on the top are very much like those on a #45 fence that lock it onto the arms....and I have a few of those.
The bottom one on yours looks like mine, but it is also should be 28 TPI.
I really have had second thought about selling it....Also on mine the pivot bolt doesn't go all the way through, and the top wobbles a bit. Looks like it should go all the way through and there is a lock nut on the bolt at the bottom underneath.
Could you have a look at that for me please??
I think it is worth the effort to get it right and put it on a shelf under the bench....and the dog hole pins are a great idea.
This year has been so busy, with getting Dad into good aged care, quickly renovating & selling the old family home, building a house for the kids at Flowerdale after the disaster at St Andrews...and work in between...so no time to have fun and make more tools. Not much to see in that line. However I will have some seriously good stuff on the table, and I plan to make the prices pretty keen so I don't take much of it home.
Regards,
Peter

The dog hole pegs are a great idea. Mine comes with two little metal strips on the front to push against the bench front, but it still moves around on the back stroke, so I think I'll add pegs to the bottom too. Thanks Luban!
Cheers, Richard

htpaa
hi, forgive my ignorance but what is htpaa and what is the "show" mentioned on this thread?
Could it possibly be another place for me to drool over tools?
Hope so
cheers Billy

This will tell you all you need to now
http://www.htpaa.org.au/nextsale.php
For us down here it's like a shoe sale where all the women are shoving each other out of the way, except in this case it's blokes jostling into place to find that plane or chisel.

Hi again Peter
I was going to soak the pivot bolt today so I could dismantle it but completely forgot before leaving for the day.
I hope these photos are what you meant and clear enough.
Attachment 110969Attachment 110970
A couple of quickies of that bottom screw. It's not all the way through in the shadows on the left but from what I can see it's a pointed end much like the tip of the screws in the photos of bellow
Attachment 110971Attachment 110972
WRT the top screws.. yep, the arm screws from a 45 fit mine and look like a dead match (the 45 is on the right)

If the photos of the pivot bolt aren't clear just sing out and I'll soak it and bring it with me on Sunday.Best regards, Luban

Luban,
Thanks for those pix
I think I can make a workable screw for the detent lock.
The pivot screw on mine is in 2 pieces, the countersunk one and another slotted one that comes up from underneath. I'm more confident yours is original because all the screws from mine appear to have been scavenged out and perhaps used elsewhere...including that little one underneath on the pivot for the detent lock. It might just fit the fence on a #67 universal spokeshave..or something like that????
Using a lock nut on the screw would make perfect sense, I don't understand how mine should work. What I did was adjust the large countersunk screw with a little grease under it, and then just screw up the slotted screw from underneath and jammed it tight, it sort of locks it, but I don't think that's how it should be.
What has me a little mystified is that both the screws in there look like the ends are made that way, and were made that length.
Is it possible yours has a two piece screw also??
Regards,
Peter

Have you had a look at the Stanley parts page? It might help you identify the screws you should have had?
Cheers, Richard
