    Nice pickup Ian.

Thanks for the info guys. I have been searching unsuccessfully for the maker of the blade (HB with a wings logo surrounding the HB) and can't seem to find anything at all. I do remember seeing a 110 block plane a year or so ago with the same logo on the cap iron but can't for the life of me find out who the manufacturer is.

Default ebay still surrenders the odd bargain.......

    Hi all,
I'm getting in early again, these arrived yesterday.
The S75 is a beaut at $27 ex UK albeit re-painted , The chisels are fine except for the split in 3/4 handle ($32) but i couldnt turn down the record 043 for $2.10. In fact it cost $15 postage from the UK. I fitted the blade clamp from my sharmanco as it was missing. Would anyone have a spare clamp kicking around?
    Cheers
    Michael.:)

Those are very nice chisels Michael. You won't be disappointed with them. Just as an aside - Rob Cosman uses them in his hand cut dovetails video demonstration, and he was a Lie Nielsen distributor at the time.
As for the Record. The blade clamp is loose fitting on those planes and would be the first thing to go missing when the parts are disassembled. You may just have to get by with the solution that you have. Nice find though.

I was at the markets today, after a three week absence, and the pickings were lean.
I was about to go home after buying the bananas and some seedlings, when I spotted an old woodie that looked like a common as dirt wooden jack plane on a table of otherwise nondescript tools. Funny, I thought, that blade has been put in very badly, it's twisted.
So I went over to the table and had a closer look.
Woo-hoo........... a skewed rebate plane in not too bad condition.
It was covered in gunk and some paint spots and the blade was a mix of dried waxy grease and surface rust. The blade was well wedged and very tight.
I bought it of course, and had a little time this evening to begin cleaning. The blade is soaking in turps and the cap iron was firmly solidified in place. The edge of the iron feels straight and surprisingly free of any chips - been inside the mouth for quite a long time I think, and whoever owned it looked after it.
I'll have a go at cleaning it up tomorrow after work. Might be able to make out who made the iron by then. It is a parallel iron, not tapered.
The body has come up quite nicely after a thorough wash with turps and 000 steel wool.
    I'll get some pix tomorrow.
I'm pretty excited by this one. Skewed rebate wood planes the size of a jack are few and far between down this way.
    More tomorrow....
    Cheers

OK late days at work this week, however here are some pix of the plane in its cleaned up state.
    On the toe it reads:
    John Moseley and Son
    54-55 Broad Street
    Bloomsbury
    London

And the blade is a W Marples and Sons Hibernia parallel iron.
I am quite happy with it.

That's cool Tom, and scrubbed up nice. I can imagine it wouldn't have jumped out at you at first but well spotted.. Given it a slice yet?? How's it go?

I'm going to have something nice to show next monday I bet, as I've resolved to go seriously hunting for tools; and I have the perfect hunting ground

    Nice one Tom

I have a very similar plane here with a busted up tote.. I picked it up at a sale thinking it would make a perfect candidate for a skewed shooting plane.. and it would have to.. if I was left handed

Nothing to report here.. neck deep in tax.. blurgh

    Thanks for the distraction
    Best regards, Luban

    Thanks fellas.
I might not get to make shavings until the weekend. Three late workdays in a row here.
Have just finished dinner and I am quite pooped.
I am looking forward to sharpening the blade properly and taking it for a spin.
I'll try to get some pix Saturday or Sunday.

    Default Saturday Morning Joy

Braved the close to zero temperatures at 6am this morning at the swap meet in Clarendon to look for something to post up here. So here I go.

Got these chisels for $15 the lot bit shabby but great for the price. 3 bergs and 3 titans.

Also bought this record curved bottom spokeshave. Got him down to twenty. It's tidy and I really need one so I'm happy..

But my first find was this plane. It's tote was poking out of the back of some pipes and bits 'n' pieces in a box on top of a ute. $15!! Deal of the year for me I reckon... It's Japanning has to be at least 90% and the handles are nicely patina'd with all the finish intact. I posted 2 pics. One as found and one after a 5 minute clean-up. Anyone know how I can accurately date it?? Patent on the on the lever cap is 7.24.88.

Tired now though, and off to soccer. Have a good one guys,
    Dane

    SG,

It's a badger plane, used to clean up the big rebates like those on a door jamb.

Also great for fielding panels with.

    Cheers,

    eddie

    Nice finds Dane.
Your plane is 100+ years old and in good order from the looks.

A badger plane - thanks Eddie.
Should come in handy if I come across any badgers that need planing.
How did it get this name I wonder?
    Cheers

There's an expression 'as rough as a badger's aris' (or something very similar ), so maybe somebody thought one of these planes might be up to the job of smoothing a badger's aris.
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
