A good day in a collectable shop where the guy is a hoarder of very nice objects, but doesn't care for tools all that much.

$40 Australian with the case and a full set of 23 Sweetheart cutters (although the plane does not have the SW logo on it.) Most of the red marking you can see is caked on fine sawdust, not rust.

He also has an AMAZING cabinet makers toolbox, very old school. He is expecting serious money for that one, and with good reason. Photos coming soon when he sends them to me.

$40! That's a steal in that condition. Big difference from the collectable shops over here, they only want like 2x eBay prices!

That is a bargain and in great condition chrome still shining. I see you also got the slitting cutter. Well done.

Pages 5-22 cover my area of interest, the making of saws, but without much useful detail.
The smaller volume (2016) is nice because it has color pictures. It presents a small amount of information that's not covered in the first book.
Both are extremely well written and edited, in sharp contrast to many woodworking texts.

I think two copies for the price of one may be a trifle hopeful. But there may be some savings to be had on shipping. I have not looked into it other than to say in principle I would be quite happy to combine our geeky efforts.

    Paul,
I pm you later about Simon Barley books
They are both available on Amazon.
Also should I put down my copy of
    Marchese de Sade book.
And wait for Simons books to arrive?

    Cheers Matt

We could even talk on that new fangled telephonic device. i will await a PM.

With regard to Donatien Alphonse Francois, I think you should check with Sally. She might have more to add than just your editorial content. t count on Simonds catalogues finding any better favour either

Things have been keeping me mostly submerged ... and I don't go round to garage sales in general ... but ...
it was next door to my mother's house (which functions as an 'office') ...
and they'd lived there 30 years ... and were friends of the family ...
    so it was fate, really.

I went there last monday, and saw and bought the Dawn vice. Resisting temptation, and lacking time, I didn't go back until this sunday.

It was nice to talk to the grandfather, who'd come from Italy and literally built in the area, for an hour or more.

When I asked about a smallish hammer, I was surprised to find out it was for drawing out the metal of a scythe before honing, and I think he was surprised that I knew what he meant.

I paid $150 for this lot ... which was half again over what they asked for.

For scale, the Dawn is a hefty 9" quick-release vice.

I debated adding to my clutter, but I had to. Home-made knife wheel made from a washing-machine motor and (maybe) the top of a vintage wall-drill(?).

Actually there was a very simple wall-drill there too, that I didn't take a photo of.

He'd also made a 2 foot long "sulphur puffer" from a tube, some flywire or mesh on the end, leather from a raincoat apparently, and a wooden base.

In spirit, like this ... but it worked axially, with a larger outlet ... (again, no photo)

On the 'minus' side, it doesn't have a start capacitor. On the 'plus' side ... you can start it rolling in either direction.

    Closer pics ...

Here's a bit of a puzzler. They chucked this one in with the job lot. A goodwill gesture, I think.
Not really knowing the whole "garage sale etiquette", I didn't want to spoil the deal, so just said "Thank you" and loaded them all up.
It's a bit awkward - does this happen often?
I guess it might take a bit of research to figure out if it's something worth keeping or if I could find a good home for it.

Well, they're kind of fun to have around at this stage, Paul, but try & find another home for it before it turns 15........

Be careful of the exhaust port on that unit. Can get very smelly several times a day. If you decide to keep it, I suggest you get a big stick or maybe a baseball bat to beat off similar but opposite versions in about 15 years time.
