    Default Mortice bottom cleaning chisel

I was chopping a few mortices today. They were small and difficult to clean out. For years I have been wanting a small swan neck chisel, but could not find one under 3/8". So, today, I decided to make a chisel for cleaning mortice bottoms. And it took just a few minutes.

The one I made used a hex/allen key about 1/4". All I needed to do was grind the foot into a chisel. Then I epoxied it into a reject marking knife handle. It is not heavy duty but it works reasonably well.

One mortice in a raised panel door I am busy on ..

Clever Derek. It's odd how frustration leads to the creation of so many short cuts. Some one is going to remember your idea and move it along one more time to build another "thing" to make thier task easier.

So a blade from a 71/71&1/2/271 would work as well, if you had a spare that could be mounted into a "temporary" handle? Necessity is the mother of invention, well done Derek, of course my idea would not look so neat as yours, especially the "reject" handle.

    Derek,
You amaze me with your innovation at times.
I've made mini chisels for cutting steel from Allen keys but never would have thought of that one.

    Hi Pat

I think that they would be both too long and too wide.

A little while back I did post this tip ..

    I like it.

Have you seen the Frank Klause vid on popular woodworking, where they video the mortise through a glass sheet?

Yep. It was good - might have been better if he had been chiselling a hard wood rather than (what looked like) soft pine.

Derek, I was thinking of the 1/4" blade. Yes it would be an ugly duckling

    Re: Vid.

I agree. It must be an almighty chisel or a soft wood.
Different to cleaning mortises in blackbutt with a set of irwin chisels like my last project.

Thanks very much Soth, but I was referring to Derek's original post - my apologies for the lack of clarity. My reading of that post is that there is a picture of his nifty tool and the mortise he is cutting, but I can't see nuthin!
    cheers
