Chisel Maker Id?
Does anyone recognise either of these please?
The socket chisel says "MADE BY" + ?? + "Hardware Mfg Co."
The second has some hard to pick lettering - at least 4 lines ...
"...NES......EY" + "....ICA...SON" + "GERMAN" + "FORGED STEEL"
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Bit hard to make out clearly, but you could check Wolfgang Jordan's website here.. Kleines Werkzeugmuseum (Sonstige Holzwerkzeughersteller) or maybe Wolfgang will answer directly, he visits this forum every so often.

Chisel Maker Id?
If one had to fill in the blanks it would be difficult to do it in German. I'm definitely not an expert but the letters 'EY' don't crop up in any German names or words that spring to mind. That might make it easier to identify if you're flicking through lists of manufacturers
...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

Chisel Maker Id?
Could it be 'UTICA' as in Utica Cutlery Co? It's a long shot but they're the only letters I can make out and they did apparently make carving tools.

Thanks Pacman ... I didn't see there was more than one reply.
(Not 100% sure the new forum software is always correct on threads that have been added to since last check)
Once again ... the mind gets fixed on a single track.
I was trying on the weekend to make something out of those little crenelations above "Hardware".
Did not see the big "UNION" ... doh.
That really ties it to the 'Samson' stamp.
Thanks,
Paul

There was a Utica Knife & Razor Co and a Utica Drop Forge Tool Co in NY.
There was also a Utica in Missouri ... don't mess with them ... Utica, Missouri History
"From 1858 to 1861 there was a "boom" in Utica. Business enterprises flourished, and the citizens began the erection of fine residences. A "society" grew up and advantages presented themselves to those who were willing to work. Upon the completion of the railroad in February 1859, the tide of prosperity swelled. Utica became a shipping point for a large area of country. From Carrollton and other towns in Carroll and Ray counties, shippers came with their stock and grain, and merchants for their goods, and a large trade was going on.
The first railroad depot was built in 1859 a mile west of town. John Stone gave the railroad company forty acres of land. The railroad company built a depot and placed it where it was most convenient for them. This location highly displeased the citizens. The citizens showed their displeasure first by soaping the rails. Later they became more drastic and burned the depot! Another building was erected and it too suffered the fate of the first. A change was made but it was still considered inconvenient by the citizens. This depot remained until on April 4, 1913 the third depot building was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin. A night operator stated he believed the fire was started by a spark from a passing engine that lodged near the semaphore. (Mrs. Will Stone, widow of the grandson of John Stone who gave the forty acres of land for the depot, still resides in Utica.)"
"Utica Tools" was a mark ... but I don't think that is what it says.

Here is a better print of what the UNION chisel might have looked like earlier in its life.
Hope it helps.
I have a thought to take some images of other USA made chisel logos which I will list on my blog at some stage - next project maybe.
Cheers

OK, I had a little time this afternoon, so I have put together a short illustrated listing of US Chisel Trade Marks and Logos.
Naturally, this is not exhaustive as there were hundreds.
It is a start, and I will add to it as an ongoing project.
These are simply some that I have and can get pictures from easily enough.
I have others but am still working on identification.
Paul, I have taken the liberty of listing your Union chisel logo on the blog - I hope you don't mind - if there is a problem I will remove it.
It's here:
A Value Far Beyond Pearls - Old World Chisels
Hope it is of some help in your quest.
Cheers

No problem of course.
I can provide these ...
And from the US ... Greenlee, Samson (Union Hardware), Crescent Edge Tool, Winsted, Witherby, Winchester, Fulton, Cleancut, Lakeside, Edgerite, Enderes, and Pexto.
but it will be a couple weeks ... I've been trying to 'clear the boards' of the posts I've been wanting to make/thinking about ... my mother (and sister) will be away from our family business for a week and it'll be pretty full-on. I don't know what she's thinking actually.
10-12 years without a break and now she wants a week off?? I don't know where I went wrong.
