    Default Mounting a Record 52 1/2 vise

I am beginning to mount my new Record 52 1/2 vise on my new bench. I have found that the rear jaw is not symmetrical.
The issue is that the height of the rear jaw varies by ~2.5mm from one side to the other. I can solve this problem by varying the thickness of the timber spacer which is needed between the bottom leg of the vise which is bolted up to the bottom of the bench.
But it surprises me that Record does not machine these expensive vises so that they are symmetrical. I see they have machined the top of the jaws so they match, but the "bearers" (which bear on the underside of the bench) have not been machine to match.
Maybe I have a dud. I have sent an email to Irwin Record in the UK but not confident of a worthwhile or timely response.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Regards

    Gordon

Perhaps washers between bench and vise on one side? I just instaled mine and it seems pretty square.

I think that Record is now being "value engineered" in India now. You may find that your brand induced expectations may cause disappointment, maybe not. Irwin moved production of (I think) all their iconic hand tools (vice grips etc) to China last year.

I have a Record engineering vise purchased four years ago. It is not a high quality unit, but the new ones look even cheaper.

If you can't get it exchanged go the shim route as already mentioned.

The washers are certainly easier than tapering the spacer.

    Thanks.

Oh I bought mine four years ago and was told by Carbatec that it was one of the last made in England (of their stock).

Yep. Just went out to the workshop and looked for place of manufacture.
There is none stated. Not on the casting nor on the box. I presume it was not made in England or they would say. The two others I have on my other benches are identified as 'Made in England'.
I bought this new one 2 years ago from Gasweld. So it seems I must have one made in a low labour cost country by people who don't know how to make things symmetrically
I will see what Irwin Record say and be more vigilant on checking where normally well regarded brands are made, before I buy them.

Good luck with that, Gordon. There are almost no brands that you can buy on reputation anymore I fear. Last year I bought some Blue Point spanners, made by Snap-On. Yeah, in China*. They are OK, but they sure as heck are not as good as old Snap-On.

I tend to do all of my tool shopping on eBay now, trying to find some good old stuff before its all gone.

*Not that I have anything against the Chinese. In fact, its the western importers who dictate the price point, based on the complete ignorance of the average suburban tool buyer who wouldn't know his @ss from his Ozito.
