moving to the dark side...
Hi,
I am gradually moving to the dark side, so I thought I would post a plane and guage I made to help with the move.

plane...
The plane is in Ironwood, with brass "bits" and the blade I got from Terry Gordon. The body was made in several pieces and glued with epoxy, and it was finished with Danish Oil / PolyU mix, then waxed.
Comments?

marking / cutting guage...
The guage is in flame she-oak (love that stuff), again with brass bits.
I wanted it to be as versatile as possible, so it has a wear strip on both faces (right & left handed?), and a marking pin on one end, and a cutting edge on the other, you can take out the one you are not using at the time. Works well, except the main knob is a bit heavy, I may turn it down some more.
Design critisisms on both welcome...

Really nice job on both tools, crisp lines and beautifully finished. I'd think of them as finished but you would feel where they could be improved. Thanks for sharing the photos.
Cheers ,Andy Mac

Thanks All
Thanks for your kind words and "greenies" (still coming to grips with the greenie concept).
Slow6 - That was the reason for building them, can't afford to just buy them, and the cheaper versions just don't inspire me. I thought this can't be that hard, why not have a go. I guess the hardest part is designing it, and getting the metal bits - eg the small brass knurled knobs I've had for a while, thinking they would come in handy for something. Now I can tell the wife there is a reason for having a shed full of "junk".
The next hardest thing is covering up the mistakes you make as you go - I'm getting pretty good at that now
Peter36 - Haven't made a lot of large stuff, but I am gradually upsizing and doing more of it.
BrisBen - It's not that hard - I did a lot of research eg. Fine Woodworking and other magazines, and the web - this forum and some of the members' web sites have a wealth of ideas.
My brief to myself was to keep things as simple as possible so even I couldn't stuff it up, but still keep it functional.
I like the idea of the "WIP" posts, but I didn't take pictures on the way for these. Just got a digital camera, so I must take lots of pictures during construction of future projects.
Thanks again All,

Hi Chris - fantastic work on both. They'd not only be a great asset in the workshop, but look great enough to be a work of art as well! Inspiring! Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Cheers,
Jill
