    Hi Ian

That is great. Your design is closer to Moxon's (and Christopher Schwarz') than mine. Note that I used 1 1/2" screws, not 1".

I agree ... How did I get along without one before?! This is the best thing since sliced bread. Everyone should have one!

    Hi Bob

Years ago I did build a double vise into the front of my bench. Where the Moxon-style vise scores over that is in the extra height it allows you to work ... higher is better.

    Regards from Perth

No general reasons I can think of, Bob. In fact I had originally intended to do just that when I started building the bench. However, the piece directly behind the apron that takes the dog holes is almost the depth of the apron, which is deeper than was really necessary, I came to realise later. But the upshot of this is that it gets in the way of holes for the screws of the dovetail clamp. It's not a big deal - it would simply mean mean very deep 'nuts', but I wanted to use 1.5" screws, and the bodgie 1.5" tap I have isn't up to the job of tapping what would be more than 4" deep nuts in hard wood.

In the meantime, Derek put his version up, and it seemed like such a good & simple idea, I thought that would do very nicely in the interim. One nice feature of my new vise is that it's very easy to demount when finished with. Also, sitting up on the bench top like that brings the job up another 120mm higher, which is good for my time-challenged eyes and back....

If & when my mate finishes the decent tap he's making for me, I will eventually go ahead & make a vise as originally intended, mostly because I can make it longer & capable of clamping wider carcase sides than the current vise, which takes a bit less than 470mm. However, it may be another 20 years at the speed my old mate works at, so don't wait for the product review before you make one yourself.

(And we won't mention the little time it may take me to get a round tuit when the tap does arrive, of course. )

Edit: - yeah - Derek notes the height advantage, too - and he's still such a young bloke...

    Cheers,
    IW

I can also appreciate the height advantage.

I like the shot in the Lee Valley link of the bloke in his car cutting d/tails with the timber clamped to his window.

    Gotta love April fools day.

I was wondering what they'd do this year - they must have a ton of fun deciding what they are going to spring on us each year!

Ya gotta love a company that takes itself seriously with a large dose of humour....
