Narex Chisels are on the way
I have just ordered some Narex bench chisels and some mortising chisels from Veritas. They are as cheap as can be. About $150 for 7 bench chisels and 6 mortising chisels. All I could read about them was positive. When they arrive I will post an evaluation of them on the forum.

Narex chisels
Chook,
I bought some, like you, although some time ago. I fettled the back
a fair bit and then sharpended/honed with double edge. They are very good
for general use and exceptional value, me thinks. Hope you find the
same and I look forward to your review. Drillit.

Somebody will be thinking "Ah but are they as good as the Lie Neilsen chisels?" Well maybe they are not. But I will bet they are a whole lot better than the chisels I have used for the last 15 years- a set of Stanley Dyna Grip chisels. I have cut and chiselled my way through several tons of timber with these and got by alright with them. The paring chisels seem almost to cheap to pass up as well. I have been eyeing them off too. My daughter lives near the Veritas store in Vancouver so she purchases tools in Canadian dollars and posts them to me. This is cheaper than on-line because going on-line you pay in US dollars.
If the Narex are as good as the reviews say then I should get many years of fun out of them. Otherwise I have had an experience to learn from and I will get the LN at the wood show next year. Either way I win.

Like most things, the amount I'll spend on chisels is proportional to how much use they'll get.
For standard/paring chisels I have a mix of LN, Veritas (the new ones), and Blue Spruce - these get used all the time (even the fishtails), so I don't mind the spend.
However, I do want to get a couple of mortising chisels in the commoner sizes. These will only get used from time to time, so I'm certainly not forking out for LN or similar. Narex fits the bill perfectly, and I'll be including a few on my next Lee Valley order.
chook - look forward to hearing what you think of them. Of course, we expect the backs to be polished up to a mirror shine......

I've got some narex chisels, both the paring and mortise versions. I also have a set of Ashley iles paring chisels.
The AI get a lot more use in my workshop than the others. The mortise chisels get, by far, the least use. The thing that puts me off is that they are HUGE. Perhaps I just don't have much experience with mortise chisels (true) and I have a powered chisel mortiser (also true), but I can't see where I'd use most of the mortise chisels.
Quality for the narex is great though. Once you do a bit of fettling, they seem to hold an edge well.

Trav - if you think the Narex are big....this is one alternative
English Mortise Chisels by Ray Iles
Made in D2 steel as well, so they'd be a bit of a bugger to sharpen (makes A2 look like cheese). Assuming you dare get close enough to sharpen them anyway.....
Cheers

I did a review of the Narex Chisels a couple of years ago. I was actually after a set of LN socket chisels but couldn't get them at the time. I bought the Narex as a temporary set until I could get a premium set. Don't think I'll bother with the big dollar set. The Narex are excellent value and I can't pick a fault with them. They'll do me. Unless a mysterious benefactor wants to buy me a set of H&S. Now they are nice chisels. I also have a set of Berg sockets that I am going to make a set of matched handles for, when I learn to turn that is, so I don't really need the bling.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I have a set of 7 mortice narex and am happy with them. They keep an edge chopping hard woods. There are better looking chisels out there but these work and that is what matters. Very good value for money.
