I've just read through Derek's tutorial and he uses a 30' jointer plane to flatten the top of the board. Can anyone explain why such a long plane is a good idea, and what could be done if you don't own such a monster! My largest plane is a no7...

    Hi Richard

    A #7 will work perfectly.

My 30" jointer just works better.

    Regards from Perth

The simple answer is the longer the plane the flatter your stock will be. Lets say you have two hollows in your stock and use a 3 inch long plane, it will go in and out of the hollows. The 30 inch will knock the high spots off till the stock is flat. A jointer may be 6 feet long or more, thats even better.

That makes sense, thanks to both of you.
