What I saw at the markets today!
Hi there,
I wandered up to the markets, hoping to run into mic-d who said he was coming. Didn't run into him, not surprising because I've not met him before!
I went and perused the usual stalls and counted 4 drawknives, a couple of them really good; a spokeshave or two; the usual planes and some OK chisels (one socket Titan mortice, about 3/8" in good nick for $15). All I bought was a nice pocket knife belt sheath (Schrade) which fitted my Leatherman pretty well, for all of $3.
I bought it from a stall selling antiques that hasn't been there before, with a great selection of pressed metal toys, circa 1940-50's, and a model stationary steam engine. Amongst it all was a tiny little plane, picked it up for a look and sure enough a #1 Stanley! Never seen one in the flesh, quite a lovely little item...but the price!! The guy reckons it was made in 1903, and was in amazing good condition for that age, without a box and all. He had $1950 on it!
I staggered home for a Bex and good lay down.
CheersAndy Mac

Hi Andy,
I think we did meet at a do on a freezing day at Ruffly's place, I think there is a photo in one of the threads.
I ended up not going up today. Do you remember my thread on SWMBO's horse accident Easter last year? Well last Tuesday she had the final op to realign her eye by cutting muscles and putting in sutures, a relatively minor operation compared to the other reconstructive operations she had. But infection has set in and we're a bit concerned about it. Anyway, I didn't want to stray too far from home so I went over to the Rocklea markets to see what they had. I picked up 1" Ward and Charles Taylor socket chisels, not sure if they are firmer or framing chisels, but they are big lumps of chisel. Also picked up a big 1/4" mortise chisel, no makers mark and a 5/16" Titan paring chisel. Also came away with 4 steel wedges and a 4lb hammer.
Only 1 draw knife to be seen, no decent hatchets, froes etc.
Cheers
Michael

No drawknives at Caboolture today either. Was a few Kent pattern hatchets and a froe but it wasn't for sale. I just picked up an axe handle and ball-pane hammer handle.

Hello Michael,
Apologies then if we have met, although I prolly wouldn't recognise you! Will have to go through the photos again.
I hope your wife's situation improves, all the best.
How much did you pay for the paring chisel? I saw a set of three today, again Titans, and they were $15 each.
Hi Derek,
How come there was a froe there, but not for sale?? Just teasing you?
CheersAndy Mac

He's a collector and had apparently bought it along to show someone. It was very old and it looked like it had been stuck with metal hammers not a wooden beetle, the back was peened over. In previous weeks he also had two cant hooks for sale. I hadn't noticed him before because he was down in the back corner but I'll check his stand out next time round.

Hi Andy
We had a consult with the surgeon this afternoon and the path results are negative for infection but she has a bad allergic reaction to the topical antibiotics which thankfully is the lesser of two weavels.
Here's a photo of the tools. The Titan was $8, and is more like 1/2". The other chisels are big berthas for general building work. Will need to get a couple of new handles and do a bit of work on one wedge so I don't get skelped.

Good news about your wife Michael. And good score at the markets too, those wedges look alright. Most you see are so old and used they seem like someone's bad memory of what a wedge was!
Good luck hunting down your peavey, Derek!

Can you tell if they are framing or firmer chisels? To get an idea of scale, the blades are 1" across, so they are pretty big chisels
Cheers
