Default Nicholson File Co - File Filosophy 1920

I came across an interesting document published by Nicholson in 1920 on the care and use of files on a site hosted by WEWillams. WEWilliams - Old Machinery Library

    Doc here: http://www.wewilliams.net/docs/1920%...011th%20Ed.pdf

Interestingly, they differentiate between Handsaw files and Three Square files, in that Handsaw files have the edges "set to give them the proper bluntness for durability".

They also state that "pressure on the file should be relieved on the back stroke".

So we don't have to lift off, just relieve the pressure.
    Apparently.

That's right Gavin. The only thing a handsaw file and a 3Sq file have in common is their triangular profile shape (and maybe the steel).

A 3 Square file is not cut on the edges (hence the name - three square(d) faces). This is so they can be used to clean out internal corners of any given engineering job. They are an Engineer's file, and are therefore double cut by default on the faces.

Yes, however it seems that most modern manufacturers seem to have overdone the "bluntness" part.

Patience, young grasshopper, it's a large file. Link still works for me.

A 3 Square file is not cut on the edges is not quite true Brett. The sharp edge is single cut, but only lightly joined, hence pretty sharp. The biggest difference is that 3 Square files are still properly made... I think. Needle files are 3 Square.
