    Default Old oilstone

I've got a very old oilstone ... well, about 20 years old. Probably a cheapy, I don't know now, but I was as flush with cash in those days as I am now . It's been used to sharpen everything from my chisels to the cat's teeth, and so, of course, me being the highly expert wood butcher that I am, has more curves per surface than Claudia Schiffer. It's now reached the point where even I don't like using it, but I don't want to put anything but plane blades on my nice, wide, flat, new stone.

How do I get the old stone flat again?

    Richard

throw it out, for $2 you can get a silicon carbide stone that will suffice for most rough jobs, it is not worth the pain and suffering trying to flatten it!
You can never have enough planes, that is why Mr Stanley invented the 1/2s

Where the hell do you find one for $2? I was tickled pink when I found me wide one for $20, up to then, I'd only seen them the other side of $50.

Richard, even bunnings has these cheapy stones.

The only old stone I'd bother flattening is an old India stone (brown and very fine), or I guess an old waterstone (unlikely here).
