OldGrains Chisels
So a couple of weeks ago i thought i`d get hold of a couple or so chisels.I have maybe six or seven (seen on side of bench/shed pics) Anyways some one in UK put up 20 in a listing. They looked good, sounded the right price so i made one bid & scored them. Sellers pic:
Once they arrived i cleaned,repaired/replaced some broken handles & gave them a coat of lacquer:
(1) Sorby 13 1/2" o/a.(2 & 3) ?. (4) ....ADW. (5,6,&7) ? but has distinct long stroke line between measurement numbers. (8&9) Footprint. (10,11,12) Top shelf -not- "Diamond" brand). (13) Sorby. (14,15,16) ?. (17) Steadfast. (18) Buck & Ryan. (19)UK. (20) .....Greaves.
I then saw a selection of five individually listed ones & innitially decided only on the one with the unusual blade design sans handle:
Figured at 99c it was a good price & went for the others.Won bids.Arrived & added handle to first one. (....Greaves/Cast Steel:
The four others are quality Japanese with characters impressed on blade & all surgically sharp. So all up the totals incl postages average out at $4.86 each. cheers

My guess is that Greaves was used as a blade for a moulding plane.
It looks like they did a fine job in creating the profile on it ... almost a shame to put it back to being an ordinary chisel.
You should be pleased with that lot. I have a dozen or so of your 'diamond' quality chisels.
Good for ... grinding practice ... lending to relatives and neighbours ... darts ... paintcans
Cheers,
Paul

Ha,thanks Paul. That beaut profiled one will be put aside in my special old tools box. The 'diamonds', well as you said........
Most of the others i`ll use for a couple of projects i need to take care of.

In between other chores decided to reconfigure side of work bench to house all the chisels. Couple of non vented louvre panels bolted behind bench frame along with brackets:
Couple of sticks drilled/cut-outs & chisels housed:
Everything back where it should be.That black thingy with the ali lid is my waste box for sweeping crumbs off the vyce/ bench:

You forgot the "stones out of horses hooves" in which case they need to be constantly sharpened on a waterhouse.

The 3 Sorby's are turning chisels ( They have the longer handles)
