Pacific North West Woody Adventures (part 2)
Part 1 is about an amazing chainsaw collection.
If that interests you click here.
Part two is about my visit this afternoon to the Inside Passage School of Woodworking (Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking).
The School is located in a very quiet part of British Columbia called Roberts Creek. It's not that far from Vancouver and even though it is on the Canadian main land there are not roads linking to it from anywahere else in Canada, you can only get there by boat or ferry.
The school is run by Robert Van Norman who was a student of James Krenov. From the outside it looks like this.
BTW that's SWMBO and she was very sweet about me taking the whole afternoon to visit this place - I just bought her a new iPad so I'm in the good books - for a while
On the inside it looks like this:
Main Classroom
Sorry its not a very good panorama, tough gig, hand held - inside - people moving around etc
Machine Room
for details see the website
Wood room (well one of them anyway).
Residential Crafstman's Bench
Residential Craftsman's planes (except one)
This one
Last one made by James Krenov!
This pair of tool sets belong to Robert Van Norman the Head Instructor.
The LHS used to belong to James Krenov who left them to Robert
More pics soon

It was great to see such focussed concentration
The project the students were working on was a basic hand plane.
Some more shots of students at work.
Here's what the teacher was making - which is what the students were going to make next.
All students are required to arrive at the school with a basic tool set that includes tools like this.
This is a set slowly being remade/restored by one of the Students doing the longer (9 month) course.

Just a few random shots to finish up with (I took over 300 shots on the day)
All in all it looks like a fabulous place - it had a really nice feel to it. The main workshop is open for students to use from 7:30 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturdays. CLasses run from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

Tool pawn and shed pawn.
Would have been a very interesting visit. Was SWMBO impatiently waiting?

Twas indeed, especially as the Craftsman in residence and the long term student were both interested in tool making as much as woodworking. I felt like I would fit right into a place like that.
I have a rather indirect link to this place through a guy I know from the Arborisite Milling Forum. It turns out he mills and donates some slabs and timber to the school. I met this guy on SUnday and he recommended I visit the Inside Passage School because he thought I would like it and I sure did!!!!
SWMBO was much better behaved than I was last week when she gave the credit cards a right thrashing last week in Washington State all the while I was moaning and groaning like a wounded bull, To make up for that I bought her and IPad. She sat on that seat (OK and visited a couple of nearby craft and coffee shops) and kept a smile on her dial the whole time. She also came with me to the big chainsaw museum in Washington - she really is an Angel
