Inspired by Darryl, Bob, et al I have pulled my father's plane out of it's carton(No not the original box, an old packing carton which contains half a ton of wierd and wonderful bits of metal which were once his tool collection.) and given it a bit of a touch up.

It wasn't all that well initially, the tote was broken in two places, and pretty much everything was/is showing a lifetime of use and dare I say abuse? In the light of the fact that this was as much "My plane" as my Dad's while I was growing up, I decided not to go all the way with a "complete restore" rather just to put it back together it clean and working, with all the original bits repaired and plenty of evidence of the life that it has led! (I will give the sole a polish and tidy up the sharp bits in due course.) One service in 60 years is probably testament to it's quality of manufacture!

This plane is a "9 inch" PACIFIC / M.E.M made by Metal Equipment Manufacturers Pty Ltd in Sydney just after WW2 as far as I can tell, certainly it was bought in the forties. It is almost identical in dimension and castings to my #4 Stanley, but the castings are a little more agricultural. My Dad was a keen handyman builder as were most people at that time, and wasn't renowned for shopping on the "top shelf" although I understand that there were a number of Australian companies producing castings (of mixed quality) in the period after the war.

Any other info on the history of the company would be appreciated,

I guess now I have to build a box for it...then we'll really see what "Q&D" looks like!

Cheers,

P
