    Default Patten Makers Mill Knife

I have one of these Patten Makers / Mill Knife
    45511.jpg

Mine is very old and made of brass with inset ebony.

I haven't had much success in finding out if these knives had a special purpose. I have found reference to them being used in these fields general shop knife, a patternmaker's knife, for leather work, wood carving, rubber cutting. But not how they were used.

Were they just your original stanley box cutter type utility knife as they had a replaceable, extendable and interchangeable blade?? Or was there something more?

    Default marking knife

I've seen that style of knife made by EA Berg labeled as a marking knife. The blade was long and protruded from the top of the handle. I guess as the blade was sharpened and used up one could advance the blade through he handle.

I was thinking of making one with a Hock marking knife as the blade.

Yes the blade is a long strip and can pass through the entire length of the handle.

I haven't seen this style before, & can't work out from the pic how the blade is locked - is it by the two allen-screws, & do they simply press on one side of the blade or go though the handle, requiring a slotted blade? I assume it's not the latter, because you could only use the blade up until you came to the slot, so there would be little point in having it go all the way through the handle.

Anyway, it sure is a bit more elegant than my Stanley knife.....
    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Blade is just a long flat bar. The grub screws clamp it against the back of the slot.

    Default an example

Here's an example on eBay at the moment (07/04/13):

Rosewood Handled Marking Knife | eBay

You will see the blade protrudes through the top of the handle.
