    Default My first plane

I've only been here (on these forums) a short while but after reading the collective wisdom and watching some youtube I thought I must be missing something as I have never used a plane before. It would appear than anyone who cares about their woodwork uses one.

I also came to the conslusion that said plane could be had from just about any Sunday market, so I went to the loca market for the first time to test this theory. Lo and behold there were a few planes on offer between 2 different stalls. I found none in the crates of rusty tools in other stalls. At the first every tool was presented clean and polished. At the second every tool looked like it had been covered in (sump) oil to stop it resting and had a gritty feel so it was difficult to see of anything had a straight edge. Both had a Stanely/Bailey No4 among others of different sizes. I chose the first as I could see there were no pits in the sole and it looks like some attempt has been made to ensure it is flat. Whether it is or not remains to be seen.
The question is, now that I have one with no instructions, how the hell does one use it? Apart from the obvious push it along the surface of some wood.
Is there a FAQ or basic guide to setting up and using a plane?

Jim Davey Planes & Sharpening - Plane Fettling Notes This seems like a good resource. There are plenty of others on google. Good luck and have fun.

No point having a plane if you cant use it and if you cant sharpen it then it is unusable. We are fortunate that now we have Google to help find out the dark arts of plane work. I picked out 2 items but there are hundreds out there.

    Thanks John

Google is good but sometimes it throws up too much and you can't tell what is good and what is rubbish.

I know what you meen. I picked out two that looked right. If you come on something and are not sure if it is gold or BS put it up on here and get some second opinions.
How are you getting along with the plane?

I've only had time for a quick look at it last night. The above videos were helpful in identifying all the parts and what they do. I have an offcut of pine which is nicely cupped, perfect for practicing on. I set about taking chunks, I mean fine shavings off it.

    I learnt a few things.
The importance of a solid work bench. I must find something suitable.
The importance of holding the work piece down. More homework required there.
The blade in my plane is concave rather than straight or convex so I was only getting shavings from the edge of the blade.
I need lots more practice. But that was the point of getting a plane anyway.

Based on this sharpening thread do I set at it with my file to straighten it and then proceed with sharpening?

I stopped off at B on the way home and picked up one of each grade of emery paper. 120 - 1200

    Default Planes and Markets

The Sunday market near my place can be a treasure chest of old planes. I bought an really horrible Stanley no 4 the other day for $20. A bit of a fiddle and a swap of some bits from other planes from other market days and I got myself a nice little tool. The high priced planes are great but there is a lot to be said for bringing some old and ugly thing back to life. I have a nice no 78 for next to nothing. Got the rust off it, flattened and squared it and it works a treat.
