Default Plane Blade Storage - Veritas Cases

Has anyone used/tried the Veritas Blade storage containers

Veritas® Plane Blade Cases - Lee Valley Tools

Carbatec does not appear to stock and was looking to order direct from Lee Valley.

As I use low angle (BU) Planes, this seems like a great idea for storing additional blade sizes (Better then paper and a box)

    Default Plane Blade Storage

I was looking at using something like a taller version of an old 3.5 inch disk box for storing floppy disks.

    Craig,

Not a bad idea, but another box in the workshop, prone to be knocked

I too was considering building a small wooden box, with a partition in the middle (To separate the sizes) and keep the blades wrapped in paper in their boxes with a small silica sachet in each. But again another space waster. Hence the peg board seemed like a good option (out of the way, no chance in knocking it etc)

I have used them, and they are good - and quite cheap from LV. I bought a few bench and a few block plane cases.

They come with a label to write on, and a spare label as well. Also a small square of something like cardboard inside that LV calls "VCI" - a corrosion inhibitor.

Not owning any Veritas planes - the one thing I will say - is that they are clearly designed for their own blades (duh ) in as far as the Stanley blades and Lie Nielsen blades don't fit all that well. I did "modify" a couple of cases slightly to help some of these blades fit. The LN and Stanley blades are too long rather than too wide, so with some grease paper they "almost" are protected - at least the pointy end is.

Try to take some photos tonight if you'd like?

I bought a new plane and 2 spare blades from LV. All the blades came in the cases.

Can't see how these will improve the rust issue we suffer from here. That's always the first requirement for storage.

Inside the case is a square of cardboard, a "Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor chip". That is a chemically-infused. Do not throw it away. It will aid in maintaining a rust-free interior.

I use them for storing a few vintage Stanley blades that I have replaced with LV or LN's. A thick coat of camellia oil has done the job so far for rust. And the blades aren't clanking around a drawer or shelf anymore.

Thanks, Derek. I saw the VCI mentioned but I'm sceptical that they can provide adequate protection. The risk that the case will not be airtight after repeated opening and closing, heat stress etc is significant. There is also the possibility that the VCI will not provide protection over the sort of long term you'd like to think you'd expect from a plane blade.

It's not airtight to start with. But Tupperware may be? Sorry I'm being facetious Richard - Chris Schwarz says its good here for preventing rust.

Agreed, but most wouldn't rely on it alone I suppose?

I got mine mainly for storage and protection than rust prevention. In fact I never thought of the case or "VCI" themselves in regards to rust. I just used my usual rust prevention regimen.

Pacman, I checked with Carbatec today, and yes the new ones come with the plastic casing, but due to older stock the ones being supplied at present are in the cardboard box.
