In fact your chisel is starting to approach the dimensions of a "slick." The boat builders and log cabin makers used them successfully for many years. I don't think there is any reason why your's won't be slick to look at and slick to use, if not actually a 'slick".

It might actually need a leather guard for the sharp bitey bit.

I always kinda wanted a 'slick' ... "Wouldn't that be neat ... Ouch. So expensive ... Wonder why they have those leather booties?"

Well recently I got one. 4".

I think Pagie is wandering into that territory.

I received my skew this week. It is certainly very high quality and I look forward to giving it a go at some point. Unfortunately I haven't turned the lathe on in a great while but I'm sure I'll come around to it again soon.

    Many thanks to those involved.

    Cheers,

    Default Handles are started.

We have started doing the handles.

We have trimmed the ends and cut them to the right length.

The drilling for the tang is next on the list.

    The drilling set-up.

    Drillingrig (Large).jpg

The blanks are then drilled at one end and centred on the same jig at the other.

After getting the socket, I used some scrap pine to get the sizing tools set for sizing the taper to fit the socket. There is a 2mm gap on where the socket butts against the main handle. I have also left 2mm in the internal nose of the socket so that it has somewhere to go in case of shrinkage.

After drilling they are stacked ready to turn.

    To be continued:

Nice procedure and Tea Lady. They are going to come up beautifully. I'm book marking your post ( and probably a couple of those still to come) for when I turn my handles . I might have to hunt down a packing case or two to source sufficient scrap pine .
