Plane Handles - Black stain?
Recently got a Stanley 4 1/2 plane (for use) - sanded the painted handles and there is a black stain that is hard to get off (see pic) - is this typical when restoring handles?
A question to those who do this more regularly than I (1st time) - what setup do you have for cutting back varnish etc b/c I found it a PITA doing it by hand/orbital sanding disc.
Front knob has a split - replacement handles cost more than the plane did! - makes me wish I had a lathe.
Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon
I suspect that you have a Stanley c1960 when the woodwork was no longer Rosewood but a nondescript hardwood. This was stained to look something like Rosewood.
It is possible to get the stain residue off, but only by sanding. An in the end you are left with wood that you will want to stain because is is B-B-Boring!
What I would do is stain it black! Yes, but without lacquer to make it look like a piece of plastic. A light stain that lets the woodgrain through, then given a little oil and wax. Remember to sand back first.
The quick-and-easy way to sand back the knob is to chuck it in your drill press (assuming you have one) and hold sandpaper against it as it spins.

Those handles are made from Beech. A Rosewood stain followed by some shellac can bring them up a treat.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I think you're right.
I have a #3 that was my FIL's. He would have bought it about 1960. It was in sad state when I got it about 15 years ago and I cleaned it up to use. I have done one other like this as well. I recall that the wood was this bland, really uninteresting grain. When you said beech I had another look (the plane was at the top of the cabinet. Hadn't used it in years).
The sides of the tote are still as boring as .. However the rays along the sides indeed look like beech. Pity the grain wasn't the other way around
A close up of the tote sides ..
I am not sure that a lot can be done to smarten it up without a stain.
