    Just a guess - maybe a domestic cream/oil will not be 100% by weight Methyl Salicylate?

    The ones I've looked at claimed to be 100% pure. If you Google 'oil of wintergreen toxicity' you'll get a lot of info. Not only have people died from using the oil, but they have died from using over the counter products that contain it. The sites that I was looking at that sell it online said to never use it straight out of the bottle on your skin, but to dilute it in some kind of carrier oil.
