also add tapping to your arsenal. tapping as in hitting gently, not as in cutting threads.
a drop of penetrant, a little heat, a little torque, a little penetrant, a little tapping with a small hammer, let it sit overnight, do it all again in the morning.
always works for me, eventually.

Somewhere else in the forum they are suggesting Oil of Wintergreen ... Methyl Salicilate ... as the 'best' penetrant.
Chemist shops have it for sore muscles apparently.

*Well* before, or immediately after screwing.

Before, during, and after, especially if an old screw.

Round 1 - the screw 1 - simon 0
Well I have tried the citric acid bath. Cleaned up the plane nicely but no joy with the screw. I'll be off to the chemist to as for that penetrating oil in the morning!

Read Graheme Collins thread on penetrating liquids in the metalwork forum.

I'd do the oil thing. I'd grind an old screwdriver for a perfect fit in the slot (else you'll just wreck the slot with the follow force)...put the plane in the vise.....then I'd lock vise grips very firmly on the screwdriver handle to give you plenty of torque and it will come off .
and I'd make sure I was turning it in the right direction. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure its RH thread (?)

Have you gotten the screw out? I once had a similar problem, the whole plane was rusted and I couldn't disassemble it to soak it in rust remover so I ended up just masking the wooden handle and dumping the whole thing in the rust removing solution. It then disassembled easily and I gave the individual pieces another soak.

Epic fail
Well after soaking in citric acid I tried tapping it gently. Tried turning it ahhhhhh managed to break the head of the screw right off. now I have the thread of the screw still stuck.
I bought a new screw from TTTG last week but now can't use it
I'm guessing the only way to fix this is drilling it out?

yeah, but be very careful. you want a good, well centered punch mark in the end of the broken screw. drill with a considerably smaller drill first. try a screw remover (easyout in USA). use heat, vibration and penetrating oil. if this plane is valuable for any reason consider having a machinist do it.

Hey guys,
I know It's a little late in the thread for this, but, be careful with oil of wintergreen. Apparently It's toxic, and is readily absorbed through the skin.

Toby,
Yes, it's readily absorbed through the skin - otherwise it wouldn't work when you rub it on your skin.
It might be a tad alarmist to call it "Toxic" though.
Tell me more....?????
We are talking about Methyl Salicylate aren't we?
I've used it almost daily for 35 years...and so have at least one more generation before me. (not for the usual purpose though)
It is the preferred lubricant mixed with bee's wax for drilling into gold, and by far the best for platinum. I usually get it on my skin whenever I use it.
According to the label on my bottle, I'm not to eat it. And I've been very careful about that for all these years.
I don't understand why it should be avoided....as I said, tell me more????
Regards,
Peter
