    Hi Ern

You can use shorter planes. Two of mine are #3s

    Thanks for the advice Derek.

In my experience assessing soles with a view to flattening them, the more space from mouth to heel for this purpose the better.

Would mild steel work as effectively? I've been keen to have a crack at the same thing, but I have a 12x6.5" piece of 1" thick plate to use as the lapping surface. My granite surface plate arrived just recently too, which allows me to scrape my lapping plate to a fine level of flatness before testing.

I think it should do fine. Keep in mind that, ideally, you need 2-3 plates. I use 3: 40/10/0.5 microns
