Hi Tom,
Your videos illustrated very well the observation you had made earlier about the convexity of some soles, how it could occur and how you correct it. And, as you mentioned, about the choice of getting your planes as flat as you want them. Pictures are worth lots of words!
Cheers Yvan

Glad my numptyness has amounted to some good Yvan
I won't bore folks even more, with how long it took me to figure this out.
Pretty embarrassing for just odd bits of mild steel, I have differing words for when I screwed up some planes that could have been sorted.
I don't think the filter would allow those words, embarrassment takes a back seat when its something important.
All this still may be unbelievable to some, especially if they have flattened surfaces before by
a flap disc with an angle grinder, on lesser precision things than hand planes, with great results.
Either way, the technique or principal is pretty much the same thing as stopped shavings for wood,
David Charlesworth gives the best demonstration of this occurrence, if someone is not fimiliar with the term.
I had seen his demonstration on hand planing previously, which is the embarrassing part.
Hopefully some overly keen folks/gluttons for punishment, who don't mind the taste of cast iron might keep that in mind,
even if they don't believe me and others.
Best regards
Tom
