Question Plane Making Workshop at DJ's Timber

In regards to the plane making workshop. Dj's Timber has kindly offered to allow us to use his shed which will be ideal for making planes. Some time in July maybe possible, details to be confirmed.

It would be nice to have a more hands on workshop then a talk feast. The idea was is that you bring along your design for a plane (CAD or a piece of paper), a lumb of sutible wood for the body, wedge, tote, knob, etc, a plane blade, batch 01, or batch 02 or other. Then depending if what method you want to employ either a laminated Krenov style or if you want to do a traditional morticed plane. Depending on numbers we can do it like a class that is structured with us working through each stage together as a group, otherwise we can work a little more freelance.

If we have time, we can do some work on hollow grinding, sharpening, and planing techniques.

If you can bring some clamps (if you are laminating your plane), glue, (if you are laminating your plane), wrasps and files if you wish to shape the plane body or a tote.

It would be nice if people could make some arrangments for a BBQ, meat, salads, deserts.

If you are intersted in coming, can you post your name, type of plane, the method you want to use, and what you can bring to the BBQ it would be much appreciated. For example: Thumbsucker, Jointer Plane, Morticed, Desert

In the future maybe, I would like to run a workshop on metal plane making with metal dovetailes.

I'll be there in what ever capacity anyone likes; demo, help, tips...

I don't think I'll bother making a plane on the day as I've got all I need in the workshop already, but I'm happy to buddy-up with someone to make one. Let me know how I can be of service.

If DJ can provide a heat source, I'll bring some meat.

    Dave.

EDIT: It should be noted that tools will be at a premium, I think bringing what you need with you might be wise.

Where did you get the jarrah from that you used?
If you intend to come along to DJ's I have a nice bit of the same Jarrah for a smoother. I'll bring the other bit also, easily Jack plane size, but the grain orientation isn't ideal.

I scored some nice pieces of Elm, paperbark, and she oak, in suitable sizes, it has been drying for 1 - 2 years and should be good to be squared up and made into planes. I suspect we could get a few Jacks, Smoothers and block planes from my pile. People are welcome to take what they like from my pile.

I could bring along I also have a small sleeper from Jarrah that could be used. I hope to go down to pick up sum sugar gum which would be ideal for planes as well.

So far the following a certainly coming:

Saturday's are better for me, really doesn't matter which one though.

I'll be aquiring a few bits of Iron Bark soon, so I might have a go at a proper scrub plane before the meet too.

Might have to wonder over to have a real live chat instead of these virtual ones. Not so very far from here. Don't need a plane though. A longworth chuck? Maybe an idea for another day.
